This is all too real. If I forget to lock up the butter when I am letting it soften, eat as much as he can as fast as he can. He has found ways to peel unopened sticks of butter. These days if I need it softened for a recipe, I usually hide it in a cupboard, under a bowl.

Mine do that too. Doesn’t have to be real butter, either. Magazine is just fine.

My kitty Vanya use to eat through the tin foil of the butter to eat it. He would also eat cappuccino flavoured ice cream.

I have a half maine-coon who thinks she is the queen of the world, not unlike a female version of Elvis, and she’s the exact same way about canola oil, of all things. We can’t leave it out.

At least that’s normal. Our cats go after plastic bags (which is also normal, but weird) and oregano. WHY OREGANO?

C Baker, my cat also goes after plastic bags and red garbage bag handles – he LOVES those. But nobody I know thinks it’s normal. He used to also chew through USB cables. During the first year I had him, I probably spent $200+ replacing electronics. He does eat relatively normal food too… like watermelon and cantaloupe. Unlike Elvis though, my kitty is only half Siamese.

Our cat Anthony (pitch black & half Siamese, too) would chew through any cables he could get his paws on – USB cables, A/V cables, and comically enough, a couple computer mice. He especially loved headphone cords. We used to have a 13″ black and white TV with an earphone jack, and my mom would leave a pair of headphones plugged into it. After replacing the third pair of headphones, they finally caught the cat chewing on the cord, and they never left them plugged in again. But he wouldn’t touch 120V cords (like extension cords or power strip cords). I think he must have been able to sense the higher current in the cord, and instinctively avoided it.

I think our current cat Gus (pronounced Goose, and also 100% pitch black) must be a distant relative of Garfield, because his favourite people food is lasagna (or any pasta with tomato sauce and cheese). He’ll also pester us incessantly until we relent and give him a bowl of milk. He’s never had the chance to get into the butter since we always keep it shut up in the cupboard.

Perhaps it’s because oregano and catnip are related plants? They are both in the mint family.

This makes a lot of sense, and now that you’ve said “mint” family, I even have my own story to share! Our cat Daisy was wild for peppermint tea bags when I was a child! They were like catnip to her! She often smelled like peppermint tea, and that’s why I gave that little trait to Sophie, when Tommy first introduced her. 🙂

The Man gave me a lovely little butter dish in the shape of a hedgehog for my birthday this year, that Lupin has already knocked to the floor once. (It did not break, thank goodness). I’m not entirely certain Elvis did not put him up to it, in the hopes of stealing some butter….

One Thanksgiving some of us were watching football when one of our dogs, a Cairn Terrier named Pippin, went quietly by to sit at the front window. A few minutes later we heard, “Where’s the butter?”

He was sick that whole night. He survived though and if he could have spoken English he may have told us it was worth it.

My Uma loves kale and spinach. I asked her if she knew that she is supposed to be an “obligate carnivore” and not want greens, and she just kept chowing down. She will sit at the table every morning at breakfast with the kids and eat hash browns and eggs or oatmeal with them, much to their delight.

My dear friend, the SF writer Anne McCaffrey, lived in Ireland with one of those half-sized refrigerators and four very inquisitive and intelligent cats. One day, she noticed that there were odd scrape marks in the top of the block of butter on the glass dish in the fridge. After a little investigation, she found that one of her cats had figured out how to open the door and help himself.

Yes, we have a rescue kitten, Missy, who just isn’t interested in anything but her dry or canned food. If we prepare a meal she will rush in, but if we give her some she will sniff it and walk out. Either she just wants to eat with us, or she is insulted we didn’t give her her normal food.

I have an old kitty who wont eat wet food. I switched her to wet cause I thought it would be healthier (I was very careful and did my research). nope. She’d lick up gravy but mostly just sit there crying at you. I was tough at first, thinking she just wanted treats and not her healthy food.

When she finally went for my Grandma for a treat (she snapped at grandma’s hand and got a finger!) I caved and went back to dry and was extra-careful about lots of water for her.

One of ours is like that too. Cat food, wet or dry, and kitty treats? Delicious! People food? Loni has no interest, no matter what it is. Our other cat, Keelik, has to be watched. Whatever the people are eating is automatically ten times better than whatever is in his bowl. The weirdest thing he’s gone for is cookie dough ice cream, though he also loves pizza crusts and the pastry parts of poptarts. Sometimes, when I’m eating one of the above, he will come sit with me and purr, carefully not looking at the food, hoping I’ll reward him for being patient. Sometimes he very carefully licks my fingers afterwards, the only time he ever does that.

I had a cat, Rachael, who despised people food – with three exceptions, she loved white cheddar popcorn, Funyuns, and the wheat crackers from cheese on wheat. I had to scrape every last trace of cheese off of them before she would eat them, though.

My Siamese, Mai Ling, loved Doritos. The only place I could put them where she couldn’t get at them was under the top of an old roll top desk. The slightest crinkle of the package would bring her running to the kitchen at the speed of light.

I wasn’t expecting a new adventure today! I hope this means the move is going well.

Things my cat has taught me. Never turn your back on butter or butter greased pans when there’s a cat in the kitchen. Never butter the pan until you’re ready to put the cookies on it. Never leave butter topped biscuits or toast unattended. Immediately rinse cups or pans in which you’ve melted butter. When you remove the wrapping from a stick of butter, let your kitty know what a good boy he or she is by letting him or her lick the buttery side of it.

Loki is the Elvis in our household when it comes to butter – I keep it covered in a butter dish on the counter, but if there’s even a trace of butter lurking outside of the lid of the dish, he’s on it in a flash! Then again, Loki steals mixed greens while I’m sorting them, and insists on licking every plate at dinnertime (he’d like to do so *before* we’ve finished eating, but we don’t let him go that far)….

That was our Dot! She LOVED butter (and bread, but not together) and could be quite the sneak about getting it. When she got older she realized that if she behaved herself when we were baking, we’d let her lick the butter wrapper. One of her few treats she never had to worry about one of the other cats wanting to “share”, as the other cats reacted much as Lupin in the sixth panel. And Dot looked just as happy as Elvis fourth panel when she got that butter!

We keep our butter in the cupboard, too. Leaving the dish out, covered, they just knock the cover off. If I slide it between the breadbox and the knife block, they fish it out and knock the cover off. I tried putting it inside the bread box and found the craftiest cat pushing up the cover of the bread box. So now the butter dish goes in a high cupboard. So far so good.

YES!!! He is! Many times folks ask if he is named after Remus Lupin (I confess, that’s why I liked the name when the Man suggested it), but he is actually named for Lupin III. The Man picked Lupin’s name, he loves Lupin III and the old, original stories about Arsene Lupin too. When Lupin was a kitten he kept stealing our pens, keys, etc, and the Man began calling him a gentleman thief. He thought of the name from that!

That never clicked before, but now that you mention it, it makes so much sense!

I love this one. My cat Misty doesn’t go after butter so much, but anything that has chicken or mayonaise in it, she will go for. She reached up once and took my brother’s piece of chicken right off his plate. It happened so fast that we had no idea she would do it or that she was even within reach of his plate at the time. One second it was there and the next it was disappearing under the stand. If I have chicken or mayonaise and am sitting on my couch, she will try and sit on my shoulder and has been known to try and get her mouth on my food as I go to take a bite.

I also have a butter fiend sharing our apartment with me. All butter now lives in the microwave because it is the only place she hasn’t figured out how to open it…yet. Her Highness also goes nuts over cheese, ranch dressing, avocado, pickled beets and raspberry flavored jello. I am fully expecting the ASPCA to turn up on my doorstep every time I break down a chicken because her meowing frequently sounds like I am torturing her with hot pokers. The neighbors always know when I am doing anything with chicken. One even went so far as to ask me some rather pointed questions about the loud meowing she was hearing from time to time. She didn’t quite believe me, until I demonstrated the behavior in her full view. My owner is not really a chatty kitty, most of the time. Chicken, apparently, turns her into an instant screamer!!

I love it when people (correctly) refer to the cats in their homes as their “owners”. I think of the old saying, “Dogs have owners… Cats have staff.”

Our little female cat, Meg, cannot be left alone with people food, especially chocolate. We once made the mistake of leaving the last chocolate-frosted donut in the box on the counter with us both out of the room. Came back to find her licking the last of it off. (She was fine….that stuff is more sugar than chocolate.)

I learned years ago that a German Shepherd Dog can take a stick of butter off a card table in two seconds and act like nothing ever happened! She did the same thing with a small beef roast! Loved her anyway, she was an awesome dog.

We’re fortunate that Fido and O’Malley are not butter fiends, but they both will go after any plastic wrap left unguarded. Now, this is not a good thing for kitty digestive tracts, so we need to be vigilant. Every once in a while, however, I find a strangely wrapped item in the litter box. (Sorry for the TMI)

I think all of us who are owned by cats have got a wealth of stories about the proclivities of our furry friends. I’ve learned that if I need to soften butter, the microwave is the best place to stash it. It’s also good for hiding anything I need to keep out but don’t want the guys to get into. Mine have always been too smart for their own good.

My cat Arioch had a thing for pineapple, of all things, and King’s Hawaiian bread.

We once left the groceries on the table for a couple of minutes before putting it all away, and got back to find that he’d dragged one of those big, round loaves out of the paper sack and gnawed his way through the plastic wrap, so he could eat the entire middle of the loaf—nothing but a ring of crust left!

Dear Georgia – here is something I know you will love – it was written in 1992 by my dear friend Evelyn Hughes, who gives me permission to share it here.

    BUTTER CROCK’RY
    The chilly, faintly slimy nose
Rose higher and trembled near the plate:
    The flimsy mind of Prospero’s
    In a lone cat’s debate.

Beware the butter crock, my friend–
A dollop dropped, a crumb or less.
    Beware the lap-lap sound, pretend
    A dubious blamelessness.

    She sprang from dorsal pose and ran;
Long time the lanky limbs did trot.
Then rested she to address a flea
And stare a while at naught.

And as in nappish doze she sat,
The butter crock its scent proclaimed,
    And, sniffing toward its habitat,
    She ambled unashamed.

One jump, no more, to chair from floor:
A morsel scored by lick attack.
She eyed the spread, inclined her head,
    And wolfed the tempting snack.

Oh, have you stormed the butter crock?
Off of the table, mangy mite!
    Unnabbed gourmet, she’s down, away,
    And scuttles out of sight.

    The chilly, faintly slimy nose
Rose higher and trembled near the plate:
    The flimsy mind of Prospero’s
    In a lone cat’s debate.

Cats aren’t supposed to be able to taste sweet, either, but be darned if my Lily girl doesn’t go wild over honey, and Chester will attempt to gorge himself on pineapple, of all things. Obligate carnivores with no sweet tooth my eye.

My ginger boy Smudge is terrible when it comes to people food, he loves everything but he especially loves ice cream. He will jump up beside me and grab my hand when I have a spoonful going to my mouth so he can lick his share.

My Border Collie, Faraday, LOVES butter.
She also knows perfectly well that she’s not allowed to get into it, so she’ll actively hide the evidence from us.

She’s too smart for her own good sometimes.

Many many years ago, when phones were still attached to the walls, I was in Basic Training for the Air Force. It was December. I called home to talk to my folks just before Christmas. My parents had gotten a speaker phone. In the time it took for my Dad to turn on the speaker phone and get back to his seat for the conversation, his cat, a 23 lb Siamese named “Tori” drank his whole glass of eggnog, that was liberally dosed with rum. Tori would not touch rum without the eggnog, nor the nog without the rum. Put the two together and he was a positive LUSH!
