” Strummin on the old banjo!”. Puck hasn’t heard that old ditty. Lupin has such a cute look with his one little fang showing.

somehow i missed the announcement that BCN was becoming a daily strip, what a wonderful surprise for me!! It looks beautiful, love the new format. Best of luck pitching to newspapers. We will keep all our polydactyl toes crossed for you. 🙂

I wish there was a little Pucky doll just like in the strip so I could give him a big hug. He is just so darn cute. And, I would want him to be wearing his tux. I’ll have to settle on hugging my five cats (4 girls and 1 boy). It will be hard to get a tux on him.
Before I forget, IT’S TUESDAY AND THERE’S A NEW BCN STRIP!!!

So she’s “Woman” now? Not “the Woman?”

    • Lorraine
      August 2, 2016, 9:55 am | # | Reply

I think it just goes better with the song. It’s still listed as “the woman” in the credits.

Fits the song’s meter; had to lose a syllable.
(I always look for the character tags — still “The Woman”.)

    • Glynis
      August 2, 2016, 10:14 am | # | Reply

I think that is only to fit the song properly 🐱🐱

    • awgiedawgie
      August 2, 2016, 12:46 pm | # | Reply

Yes, it’s to match the meter of the song. However, musically you could still include the word “the”. The note on “with” has a long enough beat that “with the” could share that single note. “The” would only take about the last quarter of the beat.

What a delightful surprise first thing in the morning! Is that ham the Woman is making?

Is that a ham? The boys love ham. Just love the expression on them, you know just what they are thinking.

Can a dance be coming tomorrow? Or will we see Elvis all puffed up? Can’t wait…oh, the ham looks great, too…as it’s a favorite of the boys, chaos has to be just a few steps away!

If a banjo comes out, I bet Tommy plays it. I guffawed, out loud. It’s a great day when a comic makes me laugh out loud.

Lupin’s look in the 3rd panel makes me wonder if The Intruder is in the kitchen with The Woman. I don’t think Puck being in the kitchen would cause Lupin to look like that. It looks like the look of puppy (or would that be kitty) love to me. 🙂

    • Sue
      August 2, 2016, 10:19 am | # | Reply

Somehow I missed that it was ham The Woman was making. Now it is pretty obvious, probably not totally awake earlier. That could also explain the look on Lupin’s face. Or he could just be really into the song that came to him when he said the first line.

Of course Puck is close where there’s ham. And it looks like Elvis’ old nemesis the pineapple, too.

What a wonderful way to start Tuesday morning. Yes, When I read the “someone’s in the kitchen” my mind said “with Dinah”.
Of course, as a tenor banjo player since the 50s my fingers itched to play it again.

What a wonderful way to begin Tuesday with a daily Breaking cat news & thoughts of strumming on my old tenor banjo I’ve been playing since the early 50s, when Puck said: “someone’s in the kitchen I know, I know”.

I see the Woman is baking her ham in the traditional style, with pineapple rings and cherries. I approve (did this myself this weekend). Do the boys like ham as much as bacon?

Sue – good call on “The Intruder” being in the kitchen – can’t think of anyone else he’d rather serenade 😉 . Sadly the song Lupin is singing means nothing to me (ignorant Limey that I am!) – I’ll have to see if I can find it on youtube later.

The song, “I’ve been working on the railroad,” is almost like a folk song mash up. The song starts out with “I’ve been working on the railroad.” Then the train whistle sounds like, “Dinah blow your horn.” Then after several variation, it goes into the “Someone’s in the kitchen with Dinah” part.

OK, I liked the “chased off the presses and batted straight to you” line. Also, Lupin singing old songs.

Chirper is a real ham fiend… she likes to steal it right off our plates when we aren’t looking (though she won’t eat it if GIVEN to her. It has to be STOLEN. Much like the potato chip she stole off my plate while I was typing this…)

In honor of the daily strips, I re-read the archive.
Note to Georgia: we need additional some character tagging…
17 Sep 2015 — needs tags for Baba Mouse and Robber Mice Gang
    — R.M.Gang also not tagged in subsequent Halloween Special strips.
    25 Nov 2015 (Thanksgiving) — tags for R.M.Gang

My interpretation of Lupin in third panel is that he was trying to hand off the song to Puck, who was completely oblivious. Wonderful!

Wait…Lupin’s deaf. How does he know that tune?

Oh, no. Am I overthinking the joke?

      August 2, 2016, 12:38 pm | # | Reply

Beethoven was deaf, too. He could still feel the music. And I don’t know if Lupin was born deaf, either.

        August 2, 2016, 2:44 pm | # | Reply

His vet in WA believed that he was born hearing, as his brothers and sisters could all hear. (And he has green eyes, not the blue usually associated with deafness). When Lupin was only a few weeks old he suffered a terrible fever and lost circulation to the tip of his tail. While he was recovering on meds, his foster Mom began to notice he didn’t come when the food bowls hit the floor. It’s suspected that he became deaf through the fever, poor guy. Never slows him down, though!

I thought you had mentioned a while ago that there was an illness involved, but I didn’t want to say for sure, since I didn’t remember it clearly. I figured if I brought it up, you’d jump in and clarify it for me. 🙂 Thanks!

Is there a joke I’m not getting in this one? From the banjo related comments, I’m assuming there’s a song I’ve not heard (note: I’m not American, might be related)

Mandy, it’s an old folk ditty that we learned in younger years. (American) Here is a simple YouTube video with the words. The second verse is where you should catch the connection with Lupin’s comments.
