Who knew that Sophie was artistically inclined? Is this the beginning of her finally speaking to Tommy?

I did not plan it this way, but this seems like a perfect strip to announce that tomorrow at 8:30 P.M. Eastern time I will be sketching and painting on a live stream. Which means, you can tune in and watch! I will try to talk a little bit about what goes into writing and drawing the comic while I work. I will be posting the link to watch a little bit before 8:30 on the studio Facebook page and my Twitter. I hope you will tune in!

I had known for a while that I wanted Sophie to be an artist, (the idea of what cats would find artistic is just too fun, and I feel like it will lead to a lot of fun headlines!) Recently a young reader wrote to me that they enjoy working in mixed media. I love mixed media work in real life. When I sat down to write this a few days ago and thought about the materials Sophie will be working with, it felt like a sweet kitty-way to put it. (Originally I was going to call Sophie a sculptor). And so, thank you to one of our readers, Aria, for the inspiration!

I used to have this book. you may want to look it up or get a copy. http://www.amazon.com/Why-Cats-Paint-Theory-Aesthetics/dp/0898156122 There have been various feline Van Goghs and its interesting how they create or “paint” images from various medias. Seeing this strip reminded me of the book, especially as there was a cat in the book that used magnets on the refrigerator to make abstract art.

Those books are…how to put it…practical jokes? Intended by the authors to come across as true but are completely made up. I don’t recall how they were marketed at the beginning, but I’m fairly certain interviews have been done with the authors in which they admit this. Not that I think they ever really tried to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. And the books are certainly cute and interesting even knowing it’s not real.

I love the materials Sophie works with, they just seem so cat-like! (IRL, our cats are fascinated by toilet paper rolls, but scared of empty paper towel rolls; not sure they react “artistically” though {g}!)

Is it just me who always reads Sophie in a French accent? I don’t know why, but I’m certain she’s French.

I actually read her in a British accent, imagining her to be a bit like Audrey Hepburn – sort of a polar opposite to Tommy’s rugged, wandering outdoorsman (although the off-screen Audrey was a lot more like Tommy). But Sophie could just as easily be French, since Audrey was born Dutch, but grew up in all three Holland, London and Paris.

She does, Sophie is blind in one eye. One of her eyes is yellow, and the other is grey/blue and a bit mottled. She is pretty as anything though, and does not let her disability get her down! 🙂

Cat art is a well recognized field.

The Museum of Non Primate Art

    120 Eastern Main Rd,
Arouca, Trinidad and Tobago; I just stumbled across this strip today, and I’m hooked. I had to review the ENTIRE archive. I love . Thank you for this joyous thing that you created, and know that your strip has at least one true blue fan in the tropical Caribbean. It’s amazing how well you have been able to differentiate the personalities of your cats. And Elvis is just so spot on conscientious, uptight Siamese. Thanks again.

Feline artistry is great! My parents used to have a cat who collected feathers that he found lying around outside (mostly from crows, with the odd seagull feather thrown in for good measure). He’d bring them in and arrange them around his food dish!
