ahhahahahahahahahaha! My mom’s siamese used to sit juuuuuuuust out of reach of my son and twitch her tail. When he squirmed close enough that the next lunge would reach her she moved off a few steps and sat down. She’d never had kittens, or been around kids, but once she realized he was a little people he was fine and she *played* with him. Sweetest thing ever.

My friend’s cat would play a similar game with her baby daughter: sit just out of reach, wait for baby to crawl over and pet her, then move away and look back.

My brother and his family lived with us before they got their own house. My niece, when she learn to crawl, had Puck and the boys scurrying for anywhere those tiny hands couldn’t reach.

I believe the bigger news story here is that The Baby’s first word is “Mow!”

Perhaps The Baby will grow up speaking the language of cats. Sadly, with a horrible speech impediment since he lacks the required expressive tail.

i cannot sit quietly and wonder any longer! i humbly yet impatiently request a spoiler: in the present, does The Baby have a favorite Cat, and is that feeling reciprocated?

While he loves them all very (VERY) much, I would have to say that Lupin gets the bulk of his attention. He tries to feed him with spoons, he tries to offer him toys to play with and markers to draw with, and seems overall incredibly fond of him. Lupin very patiently accepts hugs and head bumps (our son tries to gently head bump them… We’re hoping he doesn’t think he’s a cat too!) They all have moments where they seem a bit confused by the Baby still, but they’re all endlessly patient with him.

When my niece was a baby, the cats tried to teach her to hunt because they thought she was some kind of insanely large kitten. It wasn’t until she started walking that they realized she was human.

The cats’ confusion about what’s so obviously not-a-kitten seems stunning, until one realizes that humans are wont to address cats as fellow human beings. “Humans and animals regard each other across a gulf of mutual incomprehension,” as the fellow said.

I feel like cats inherently understand that babies are younglings, and so the same instinct that keeps older cats from murdering annoying, energetic little kittens kicks in.

I agree. When my sons were little, we had one extremely patient cat who they loved to crawl and chase after. She would tolerate them only to come up to me a little later and give me a dirty look as if to say, “Make your kittens behave!”

I love that the baby looks like a Kewpie Doll. Georgia, is that on purpose?

Also, I knew a baby whose first word was “Kitty”. (Pronounced as “kee” but we all knew and besides parents were both cat nuts.) I love “mow mow”.

It is a bit, but also modeled after real life–our son really did have that little curl (and was often compared to a Kewpie Doll, which I have to admit I kind of loved…). His hair is a lot longer now at 21 months, and so we’ve lost his “shark fin,” but we remember it fondly. I just posted a few photos over on my Facebook studio page for comparison!

And that is so funny on “Kitty!” One of my sister’s very first word was “Mocha” for our Siamese cat’s name. 🙂 “Mow, mow, mow, mow” is the sound our son says kitties make, and what he calls them too.

Soon many things to love about this comic! I think one of the best parts is where Elvis throws out a tabloid escalation. Or it could be Lupin knocking everything over. Or is it their incredulity over how fast baby moves? Or the last panel where Lupin and Puck have pretty much sacrificed Elvis for their own safety?

And we know that Elvis will be furious that they threw him under the bus (er, baby?), and rightly so!

My cat does all right with visits from small humans in the pre-mobile stage, but is decidedly unimpressed once they start moving on their own…

Georgia, I think we’ve discovered the truth of how Lupin GOT INTO THE MARKER. (Which I have to say I loved that it was a single marker.)

It’s a real shocker to the boys that the baby is mobile and so fast! Like a tiny cheetah! The pictures just make me laugh especially when Elvis is caught and Puck is misquoted. Keep ’em coming, Georgia!

Hi, Georgia! This is Ellanie’s sister. My son is the one who is all about octopus and loves the one you drew for him. When he was a baby, I had a cat named Ginger. He called her Zheezhah. One day he was following her through the living room, crawling and uttering his first word, just like this: ca….t, ca….t. I sometimes coach singers and I wonder if that influenced him having to get the final consonant on.

Why is there a bunny in panel five? Is it a stuffed animal? Does it belong to the kitties or to the baby? The bunny also looks like it’s looking for a place to hide.

It is a stuffed animal! Well–blankie, a bunny blankie! It belongs to the Baby in real life. And it may be trying to hide too, lol!

It’s almost as if he’s been reading this, but my nearly 2 year old nephew has taken to following my cat at speed (on foot admittedly) while chanting “mow mow”! Loki has adopted Lupin’s approach of least in sight, which just spurs the little critter on! I reckon if he ever catches Loki, their expressions will match those in panel 7!
