I know that having never grown my whiskers out has definitely negatively affected my vestibular system, particularly where spatial orientation is concerned. I don’t corner well with my own body, always managing to collide with things, and no matter how wide a doorway is, I will manage to bump into the frame.

Well, Miss Elizabeth, I don’t know how many birthdays you have celebrated either. But I have known girls who started growing their whiskers a lot younger than I did. And I had a full beard when I was 20!
As teenage boys, we thought it was hilarious that a girl would have hairier arms and face than we did. Now, as the father of a teenage girl, and working with a whole lot of teenage girls, I realize to my shame that we were just mean little boys.

I got groomed yesterday (thankfully, my balance has not been affected by the 6 or 8 inch difference in my hair) but my guy Shadow looked at me when I got home like “who the heck are you and what did you do with my Mama?” So I understand Elvis’ consternation in the second panel.

Oh! I must tell you that my brother’s family is in town staying with his in-laws. Every day when my 7 year old niece comes over, the first thing she says is, “can we read Cat News?” The same thing happened at Thanksgiving. As soon as we start reading them, her 11 year old brother takes his head out of whatever device he has and magically appears within viewing range of the strip. She LOVES to draw and last night she spontaneously started drawing Lupin holding a mic! Tonight I’ll try to share some of her work on your Facebook page. I’m a very proud aunt.

Yes! Especially when the Man was “New” to Elvis and I, when we first got together in 2010. Elvis groomed the Man’s hair often like this! He still occasionally does this to his arms, lol, which are not very fuzzy, but seem to be a favorite nonetheless.

Chanur used to -insist- on getting into my hair after I washed it. I had to put my head down to his level and he’d stand up and grab hold (firmly!) with both front paws and lick away. Sadly; they changed the shampoo formula and he stopped entirely. What shampoo do you use???

Georgia, I’ve look back quite often on your stories and artwork since you started this strip and have been struck with how it’s progressed. Your current art style formed early after the first few strips although it’s continued to improve. But your stories, jokes and word plays have grown by leaps and bounds! I find it remarkable how GOOD it’s become!!!
When I first started reading your strips, I enjoyed them. But now, I can barely wait for Monday and Thursday to see what you’ve come up each time. Like the others, the news feed at the bottom of some panels is a favourite of mine. These ones in particular are genuis. I’m so glad you love doing this web comic for us and it’s special to read that our delight in reading these makes you as happy too!

Thank you, Jude!! I am very proud of how far it has come; it feels many days almost like it sort of draws itself in my head and I shake up the pencil and pour it out, ha! (It’s not ALWAYS that easy, of course, but these characters have a certain sort of something special to them that makes writing with them a joy). And readers have made a huge difference too, I think. The more encouragement I’ve received, and understanding when a strip has to be late or postponed, etc, the more my confidence has grown I believe–and it’s made me feel safer taking a few risks, like writing specials very close to my heart and sharing them. Usually that would be sort of terrifying, ha! In a very short time I have come to love writing those for you all though, and I think it’s due to how supportive and kind everyone has been! This strip would look much different if it had indifferent readers; kind of like Tommy and his Christmas tree. There’s a lot of love being put into this strip on both sides, I think, and it’s made a big difference over a short time!
Please, please,please keep taking those risks, Georgia. It is amazing to see the evolution of the drawings and story lines even over the short period of time that I have been following it ( I discovered you a few months ago and have been pointing all receptive friends to the strip, with 100% success). The artwork is by turns whimsical and poignant, often in the same strip. You manage to tap in to a stream of experience common to a very broad group of people, across the country, who have never met and likely never will. On top of all that, The Boys look adorable in their little Pajamas. I particularly like Elvis in his glasses, bathrobe and little sleeveless tee shirt. It adds to his Edward R. Murrow, hard-bitten newsTom mystique. As far as understanding when the strip is delayed, you give us a great deal, but owe us nothing. Always worth waiting for. I just wish you were a daily strip, published in my newspaper, with multiple books and a tv special, and well compensated :).

Your characters may be entirely in your head—but they, not you, have the final say. In your case, Georgia, they are not in your head, but, as everyone knows, the cats are in charge. Humans are in charge of quarters, rations, and the weather. Cats are in charge of EVERYTHING ELSE. Period. (Just ask one.)
Love the strip, and I finally understand what the “crawls” are….and I remember dreaming this morning about my long hair….maybe it’s time to cut about eight to nine inches off, it’s about your length Georgia. Only I wear it in a bun, long hair doesn’t wear well on 62 year old women.
Long hair can wear beautifully on a woman of any age. Just treat it according to its natural type: Let curls be curly or keep straight hair smooth, and style it according to how YOU like it, not how you think you’re supposed to wear it because you’re in your sixties. If you’ve embraced your silver/grey/white, use products that bring out the sparkle and that cancel out any yellow tones. No matter what the colour, natural hair will always look glossier and have more dimension than dyed hair, but if your hair is dyed, use sulphate-free products to help the colour last longer and look better. (My mother is 68 and her hair is almost pure white. When she combs it out, it can look frizzy and a bit dry, but when she lets her curls set naturally, her hair is luminous.)
I quite agree with you, Fish Lady. My mother is 70 and has kept her hair fairly short for almost as long as I can remember, and she has been dying it to cover the grey hairs ever since she noticed the first one.
However, her best friend, who is only a couple years younger, has wonderfully long hair. I’m not sure if it’s still blonde, or if it’s turned grey or white, since it was such a light blonde naturally to begin with. But she doesn’t color it, and she doesn’t curl or straighten it, so it flows very nicely.
My cats always chose this activity to do in the mornings, not only to awaken me but also (obviously) to improve my appearance. This strip reminded me of their soft but sandpaper-rough tongues, sometimes having a go at my head from both sides of the pillow at the same time. Perhaps this contributed to my lifetime gift of good balance. You Grok Cats.

Love the strip, and I finally understand what the “crawls” are….and I remember dreaming this morning about my long hair….maybe it’s time to cut about eight to nine inches off, it’s about your length Georgia. Only I wear it in a bun, long hair doesn’t wear well on 62 year old women.
Long hair can wear beautifully on a woman of any age. Just treat it according to its natural type: Let curls be curly or keep straight hair smooth, and style it according to how YOU like it, not how you think you’re supposed to wear it because you’re in your sixties. If you’ve embraced your silver/grey/white, use products that bring out the sparkle and that cancel out any yellow tones. No matter what the colour, natural hair will always look glossier and have more dimension than dyed hair, but if your hair is dyed, use sulphate-free products to help the colour last longer and look better. (My mother is 68 and her hair is almost pure white. When she combs it out, it can look frizzy and a bit dry, but when she lets her curls set naturally, her hair is luminous.)
I quite agree with you, Fish Lady. My mother is 70 and has kept her hair fairly short for almost as long as I can remember, and she has been dying it to cover the grey hairs ever since she noticed the first one.
However, her best friend, who is only a couple years younger, has wonderfully long hair. I’m not sure if it’s still blonde, or if it’s turned grey or white, since it was such a light blonde naturally to begin with. But she doesn’t color it, and she doesn’t curl or straighten it, so it flows very nicely.

So *that’s* what my cat Chloe is trying to do! She’ll rub and lick and even kick my hair–especially when it’s wet. She must disapprove of my style.

My cats always chose this activity to do in the mornings, not only to awaken me but also (obviously) to improve my appearance. This strip reminded me of their soft but sandpaper-rough tongues, sometimes having a go at my head from both sides of the pillow at the same time. Perhaps this contributed to my lifetime gift of good balance. You Grok Cats.
Our Cornish Bandit regularly grooms my husband. For about 15 years now!
