Hello, everyone!! Happy Monday! This pretty much happens in our home no matter how many toys the boys get. They will zero in on one toy, and battle each other all afternoon for it!

Thank you so much to everyone who has bought the book! And thank you for sending me pictures and posts of the book out in the world! Each one that pops up in my social media feeds makes me incredibly happy! I’m delighted people are enjoying it! It’s wonderful to have the comic in print, especially for folks who may not do the computer thing. This has been one of the best things about the book coming out for me, because it means my grandmother is able to finally read my comic! She was born in the 1920s, she’d scold me for revealing her real age so I won’t, (a lady never tells, she’d say!) but simply put, she does not do computers at all. Now each night she and my uncle read one “story” from the book. It’s not easy for me to put into words what that means to me, but pretty much “everything.”

I also want to thank everyone who has been leaving good reviews of the book on Amazon and Goodreads (and in other spots as well!) Thank you so much! That’s something that helps me out a lot. The publisher loves good reviews! (I do too, of course!) I’m trying to make the best showing I can for the first book in the hopes that we can publish more in the future, and believe or not, 5 star reviews on Amazon are something small you can do that could be a big deal! I appreciate each one so much! If you haven’t left one yet, I’d love if you’d consider it!

This weekend Goodreads gave me an author profile! You can find it here: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/14532790.Georgia_Dunn If you follow me there, expect many reviews on comics, paperback mysteries, historical non-fiction, and children’s books! I’m learning how the author side of Goodreads works, and I’m going to try and answer some questions there for people.

This has been an amazing week, you have all made me happy and helped a lifelong dream come true! I’ve written thank you here many times, but it will never be enough. I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful, supportive, encouraging community of readers surrounding this comic! ROUND OF HIGH FIVES, EVERYONE! WE DID IT!

The only thing I didn’t like about the book was how short it is! Now I have to leave a note in the copies I bought to give as gifts to go to the website and find September 29, 2014 so they can continue the story (and it’s the report about the Man losing his tail, no less!. 🙂

I pre-ordered a copy of your book and it arrived Saturday. I have been sharing what has been happening with the BCN with my brother, especially since Beatrix’s arrival. When I got my copy of the book on Saturday, he looked at a few pages and immediately went to get it on his Kindle. He was chuckling to himself while he read some of it earlier this evening. Thanks for sharing your talens with us.

It’s funny with toys and felines…with our gang of 8, they seem to specialize. Jasper (black and white) likes to chase a plastic ball with a bell in it all over the first floor–but only after 11PM. On the wood floors, it really scoots along–and you can hear it anywhere in the house…(sadly). 5 of them LOVE catnip toys and bags–we find them hiding everywhere…but a couple of them could care less about toys–they prefer computer mice, stuff on counters and, of course, boxes. They ALL have to experience the adventure in each and every delivery box. Paper grocery bags are fun, too–but only with the handles cut off. What goes through their minds must be amazing!

I have a Jasper, too. He’s black with grey tabby swirls. The jingle balls are his favorite toys, too. He loves to send them bouncing down the basement stairs.

We had Siamese cats when I was a child. One of the was a retriever. My dad was a smoker. When he’d finish a pack of cigarets, he would fold the packet in such a way that it ended up looking a bit like a boomerang. He’d then toss it into the next room. Our male Siamese, Big Bad John, would bat it around for a bit and then bring it back to my dad. When BBJ got tired of the game, he would poke his toy under the furniture. Our ancient, too heavy to move refrigerator died and we had to buy a new one. When the delivery guys finally managed to get the old one out of the kitchen, we discovered that the area under the refrigerator was stuffed almost solid with cat boomerangs!

I’m also noticing your strips may be getting just a bit shorter in length–part of the move towards syndication? And the need to produce more product in condensed timeframe? Either way, they’re awesome! AND we all can hardly wait for book number 2–“Boys Will Be Boys!” The first edition is epic!

    • Georgia Dunn
      May 16, 2016, 12:30 pm | # | Reply

Yes! When I make the transition to daily strips (in the future, most likely a year-ish or so?) the strips are going to be in a traditional daily format, with one longer Sunday strip. (There are about 250 strips right now in this format!) I’m doing my best right now to return the web strips to their original shorter length, while web specials will be a little… Well, “special,” ha, and have possibly have longer strips occasionally.

I’m able to get more strips done when they are shorter. The longer strips have been really fun to create, but a scramble to finish and post on time. All of the careful planning and plotting of the comic aside, I think that the longer strips this winter may have also been me dealing with our cross country move. This week I’ve been looking back over the past few months and thinking that. It was a great comfort to spend a little extra time writing stories centering behind the scenes in the studio. Now that Beatrix (in the comic) and I (in real life) are both more settled, it’s time to report the news!

        May 17, 2016, 1:30 am | # | Reply

“traditional daily format”? Do you mean the three/four panel style? If so, that is bad news for me.

        • Georgia Dunn
          May 17, 2016, 3:08 am | # | Reply

I do mean that, but I want to explain some of what is behind this, because I know hearing something is going to change can feel terrible, and I know you won’t be the only person feeling like this could be bad news. And even if you were the only person feeling that way, I’d still want to try and make you feel better about this.

There are two major reasons why I’m working toward changing the format in the future. Newspapers won’t accept a daily strip that is as large as the current web strips, and I can’t keep up the pace of the current web strips without burning myself out. Right now I write/paint about a page a night to create the two weekly web strips (they’re each about 1-3 pages long). I absolutely love writing these, but it’s been a juggle to keep up. I can give the comic a long life if I shorten the strips in the future to a more manageable work load.

If you just don’t like that three/four panel format, there’s not a lot I can say. However, if you’re worried about the comic changing, I can let everyone know this is something that I’ve been working on since November 2014, with my editor who is a ‘Breaking Cat News’ fan herself. Our biggest goal is to make the transition without losing the comedic timing, little details, character quirks–any element–at all. The folks at my syndicate have given me the time, encouragement, and support to try a lot out and see what works, what doesn’t, and examine why with an aim to keep “Breaking Cat News” itself. There are 250 daily strips so far in the 3-4 panel format. There are more to come. This is not something that’s being decided quickly or thrown together. I write them very similarly to the way the comic is now; I aim for a joke or punchline or some little special something in each panel. Many of the current web strips actually break down into about 4 daily sized strips. Often a story is going to have time to play out over the course of a week, Monday through Saturday.

There’s a difference in print comics and webcomics, and not every fan of webcomics likes print comics and vice versa. I love both. However, I grew up on print comics and this has been my goal since I was a kid–I have to try. I wouldn’t attempt this if it meant that ‘Breaking Cat News’ would be any less funny or fun than it is now. I am gently asking folks to trust me and to wait and see if it really equals bad news. I’m here to knock it out of the park. I don’t know that I can; I’m not going to get cocky and say I can, because I don’t think the result would be any good if I thought that. What I am going to do is try my very best and work hard and get it right.

Well that means you can do about normal-now-size sundays!

            Georgia,

Whatever you can do for us is greatly appreciated. It is obvious that you can keep the flavor of the strips intact-I look to the example of your serial/specials (like the Christmas serials in the last year, and the Elvis is missing one) which carried a story line over an entire month without missing a joke or little nuance. I can’t speak for the entire Breaking Cat community (and you DO have a community-you built it) but the last thing you should do is burn yourself out, or even worse, begin to dread having to do it. You WILL knock it out of the park, at least for this avid fan. I am just grateful for the lift twice a week, and hope to see it in a newspaper near me soon. You just do what seems right to you, in whatever format, and I suspect that the majority of folks will follow along and love it. Your best if more than enough and I am grateful.

Ouch! Bill Watterson (“Calvin and Hobbes”) wrote of the issues of the usual format. Much of the charm of BCN comes out in the colour, the detail, and the length. Three/four panels of black-and-white will sacrifice that. I hope BCN does not suffer, but I fear it will.

I had some concern/hesitation when I first read about the traditional daily format, but then it sunk in that the strip will be DAILY! Mondays and Thursdays have been the highlight of my week. With this change, your strip will brighten every day of the week!

:::: laughing helplessly :::: I find this true in my own life! I’ve noticed that any panel with Beatrix in it has a whole different palette and intensity of color from those with the Boys. Is that a nod to Beatrix Potter?

They’re very happy colors. Any strip with Beatrix in it, especially in the bookstore, makes me happy. A friend thought it might be a function of a different location, and on further thought, I realized that the Barn also has its own palette. But the store – and Beatrix – are just breathtaking.

My cat has 6 identical rattle mice and only plays with one. So I keep the extras in a drawer so when this one is worn out I can replace it. I know it sounds weird, but this is the only kind of toy she will play with. Except bottle tops. I often wake up sleeping with her mouse and 3 bottle tops.

Still waiting on Amazon to ship my copies. I ordered in mid March, but they are not even packaging it up until maybe today. It is killing me with anticipation, hearing how everyone is enjoying it :). Darn mega retailers… I will absolutely do a review when it lands here, once I am a “verified purchaser” or whatever the terminology is. The wait will only make it sweeter. I agree with one of the earlier posters- boys will be boys would be a great title for the next in their looonnnngggg series.

Perhaps Martha’s is taking so long because the first edition was already sold out when she ordered? I was very surprised when my package from Amazon arrived right on release day. I bought three: one as a gift, and one to lend out without losing my own copy. Too often I lend out a book and don’t get it back, and my horrible memory means I don’t remember who has it. 🙁

Georgia, I post book reviews on LibraryThing, GoodReads, Amazon.ca and Amazon.com in addition to my LiveJournal blog, and am quite ready to post a 5-star review of your book – as soon as it arrives here, argh!!!! Pre-ordered back in November, yet Amazon is dragging its heels and it’s still not here – I’m hoping for it to come today. Whenever it does, be assured you’ll get more good reviews posted (and, hey, I’m among the Top50 reviewers at the Canadian version of Amazon!)…. Congrats in advance!

That is so like our cats too – we have several things called “Kickeroo” (from Kong, the cat toy maker) which are the perfect size for cats to wrap their paws around and, well, kick – but they all only like the tiger-striped one! That and empty boxes are their favourite toys….

Oh yes, Parker (named after the Beth Riesgraf character on Leverage,) throws a ginormous hissy fit if we ever, ever, ever dare to toss a delivery box before she decides whether she wants to keep it. And if she blesses the box with sleeping in it gods help us if we throw it out.

Unfortunately one ended up biting off pieces and swallowing them so I had to take the rings away. Had to stop bringing home leftover helium balloons too because he’d eat the ribbons! He (Clueless Morgan) even ruint a -brand-new-never-used- keyboard for me by biting through the insulation on the cable!

We have a hard “no ribbons” rule in the house do to Elvis, who would slurp them up like spaghetti if we let him. Family is continually put off as we stop every gift for Toddler and Baby at the door to throw all the ribbons and bows away, but we’ve got to keep Elvis safe! (And we keep telling them no ribbon, but, alas…)

Easter grass too! We use paper Easter grass, thanks to Elvis.

It’s so rare to find something that never fails to draw a smile!

The flip side of this is humans buy toys in different colors and then wonder why the color-blind cats can’t tell which is which.

Strangely enough, a friend of mine had a cat who DID care what color. She brought a blue stretchy lizard home from a trip once, and he dug into her luggage to get to it, sight unseen. She brought a different color home another time, and he was not interested at all, but later went ga-ga over another blue one. Color-blind or not, only the “blue lounge lizards” were interesting, in a “he is evil and I must destroy him” kind of way.

Of course we trust you! We also appreciate that this is a lot of work and you have a young family, and we can’t expect you to run yourself into the ground just because we think the current format is nifty. You’re a fabulous cartoonist and will make BCN spectacular whatever the format is. I’m glad you have the space to explore the different ways of doing it, so that it will fit into your life as well as possible. Too many people expect artists to be ridiculously self-sacrificing, and I am all in favour of art being properly respected as a job, and artists being allowed to have a life just as much as they would with other jobs.

Thanks for the additional information, Georgia. I too am a fan of newspaper comics as well as web comics. Many of my favourite newspaper strips also run multi-strip story lines, and I’m sure that BCN can successfully transition to this format. For those who like to see the whole story on one page – this is another good reason to keep buying new BCN books!

Hi Georgia! Yet again, this little vignette of cat behaviour looks very familiar!
I picked up two copies of your book at my local, indy bookstore (Brookline Booksmith) – all they had, and the books hadn’t even made it to the shelf yet! I happily devoured mine and gave the second copy to my niece who is as in love with your comic as I am. Every time I think it can’t get better, you top yourself. In my mind, you’re in the same league as Watterston, Breathed, Thompson… so creative and giving of your talent.
I’m glad to see that Beatrix has transitioned to her new home and responsibilities. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall when she and Trevor met one another. You’ve created a truly beautiful friendship there. Best regards, ~ Victoria

    Georgia, I posted this on my Facebook page in January. I now know you can relate;
Most people know cats love boxes. So I got my 3 cats 3 boxes which are exactly the same. Upon observing there behavior I developed this algorithm:
Tb- Total number of boxes available
    Tc- Total number of cats
NGBCP- Number of Good Boxes from Cats Perspective

    Tb + Tc = N
    N – ( N-1) = NGBCP

Example- 3 cats and 3 boxes

    3 + 3 = 6
    6 – ( 6 – 1 ) = 1
Thus from the cats persepctive they will fight over who is going to use the one box and totally ignore the two perfeclty good boxes smile emoticon

My cousin just pointed out this comment trail. I totally missed it. Yes, my Siamese loved cigarette wrappers. She preferred them with a twist and would jump after them like a dog going after a Frisbee. I don’t smoke though so would have to ask strangers for their empty packs. They generally assumed I wanted to bum a smoke but would then be very confused when I explained I just wanted the empty pack. The things we do for our cats!
