As always, this is totally relate-able and a wonderful strip! I just went grocery shopping today, and as usual, before the groceries were even out of the bag my cat was investigating! Then it spiraled into playtime. Cats really do make the mundane awdorable!
The one good thing about disposable grocery bags, kitties have such a great time. We have eco-friendly bags we use, but they don’t make the noises that the other kinds do, so our cats won’t play in them. Unless we picked up some catnip that is.
Cosmo Kitty used to lie in wait til the big doofy Lab (Rascal) would investigate the bag. Then, WHAM! A swatt on the nose. Poor dog, he wasn’t too bright, it happened every week.
My cat is very happy she’s an only cat for many reasons, not least of which is she gets to crawl into paper grocery bags unmolested. In fact, as we can see here, given the choice between a grocery bag and an impossibly tiny box, she picks the bag: https://www.flickr.com/photos/jools_78/16313938361/
I can appreciate Lupin still not knowing who is in the bag. We only have two cats, they have lived with each other for over ten years and they STILL get spooked sometimes when they see the other one. I always have to tell them “there’s only two cats living here! If you see a cat, it’s the other one that lives here!”
I have them put the meat in plastic bags which I later use for cat litter disposal. If one of the plastic bags falls to the floor, Jasper, my tabby boy, will a running, flying leap onto the bag and go bag surfing across the floor.
I know everyone loves sweet Puck (my Mom included), but I have to give a shout out to angry Puck. Those angry eyebrows make him even cuter to me. Sorry, Folks!
I am pretty new to Breaking Cat News, but I love it! It’s super cute, funny, and as others have said, an accurate representation of what life is like with a cat(s). I also really admire your watercolor skills. I’m a graphic design student and one of my courses involved having to work with watercolors, which was a challenge for me. I think they make some of the most beautiful art, though, and I’d like to get better at using them! Good work, all the way around!
Thank you, Tisa! I love watercolors! I started them when I was about 19, at my father’s urging. He was a newspaper photographer for 30 years, and used them to restore old negatives before the days of Photoshop! He would print old photos very large, paint the scratches and spots away with different sepia watercolors, and take a new image to save the corrections. When I kept wanting my drawings to have “a light, ethereal” coloring, he gave me a set of watercolors and convinced me to learn them. They were quite difficult at first! Experimenting over and over really helps. If you enjoy them, you’ll have a blast playing with them and get better all the time! In my illustrations–which are in a much different style than the comic–I try to give the paint a lot more freedom to dry-as-it-will. That can be a lot of fun when it works right! And it keeps it feeling like it’s a new challenge. (I have a lot of watercolor feelings, as you can see, ha!)
Wow, that’s really cool! I recently worked on a photo-retouching assignment and struggled even with Photoshop’s magic – I can’t imagine the work that your father put into getting the precise colors for the pictures.
I think I’m going to have to pull out my watercolors and have another go!

Having outdoor cats adds another dimension to this. The cats try to break into the car before you even get it unloaded.

Our late, beloved Duke always knew when we brought home paper bags. He often tried to help empty them.
